About John Ellsworth
"I'm attracted to the concept of water. It's turbulent and strong; it's peaceful and reflective; and it's common and humble—always seeking the lowest levels."
My photos are noted for their unexpected points of view and reflections. I look to photograph strong compositions that emphasize light, shadow, water, and often reflection as a visual form.
My perception of water is likely based on my experience on the water. I spent two years in the U.S. Navy, taught sailing in the West Indies for three summers for Sail Caribbean, earned a 50-ton Captain's license for auxiliary sailboats, sailed to Central America for three months in my youth with three friends, and I've owned several sailboats along the way.
I studied visual communications and aesthetics at Queens College, Columbia University; and at the International Center of Photography, NYC. I've also taken workshops with Galen Rowell, George Lepp, and Moose Peterson, noted outdoor photographers. I'm a professor emeritus of communications at Nassau Community College.
My writing or photography has appeared in Sail, Boating, Good Old Boat, The New York Times, Hamptons.com, Dan's Papers, and in several Huntington and Northport (NY) journals.
